Goal: Review and sort words from an upcoming reading to make predictions about the text.
1. Reading
2. With your partner get this Probable Passage document and use File/Make a copy to get your own version. (One of you make the copy and share it with your partner.)
3. Sort the words into the plot profile categories and then use those words to write a prediction for the story we will read on Monday.
Homework: Read, really read a lot. You need to read and review two books of your choice this grading period. Less than 5 weeks left. If you don't like your book ask for help picking a better one.

Tuesday: Article of the Week
Mrs. Roberts is at an all-day meeting today. You still have a lot of work to do.
1. Read at the bell
2. Read the AOW about the three chambers discovered beneath Mexico's ancient city of Teotihuacan
3. Write a brief summary of the article in your English Journal.
4. Answer these questions in your English Journal: How does the article fit with what you already knew about early American civilizations? What does the article add to your understanding of America before the year 1000 AD?
5. The article has a quiz. You are welcome to take it for practice.
6. Finished? Look around on newsela.com for another article that interests you (self driving cars anyone?) or read your independent reading book.

Welcome to Second Semester
Happy Monday everyone,
I know you are very sad Ms. Black won't be your teacher anymore. The good news is that you get me, and really we are a lot alike, which is why we had so much fun working together last semester. I am going to miss having her in class with us too.
New Unit: Comparative Analysis
We are kicking off the new semester with a new unit. Comparative analysis means looking closely at two things and comparing how they work. We will start with some poetry, then some short stories and finally even compare what an author does with a story to what a director does with a film.
1. Lets read, be sure you have a book.
We are going to look at some techniques for reading poetry this week.
2. Read this poem A Barred Owl by Richard Wilbur. Read it a few times until you are comfortable with the literal meaning of the poem.
3. Let's look at this prezi about poetry analysis together.
4. Use this document to organize your thinking about the poem. It is view only, make a copy for yourself to edit. You do not need to share it with me.
5. Be sure to complete the paragraph at the end of the doc AND paste it into your English Journal.

Final Preparations
Let's read!
Today we make sure everyone is prepared for the end of the semester (i.e. your final).
You need:
- A tab for this blog
- A tab for your English Journal
- Enthusiasm! (Trust me, the world is a much simpler place if you muster up a bit of enthusiasm about it. These are my parting words of wisdom.)
Today you will:
- Take a look through the blog posts from this semester. You should definitely go all the way back to September. (In fact, you should probably start there.)
- In your English Journal, make a list of all of the key terms and concepts we have studied.
- Choose five or six that you personally need to review, and create an example that demonstrates each concept after you have reviewed the material
- Work alone or with a partner. You can help each other fill in missing links.

Respond to the following questions in your English Journal.
1. What is McBride’s purpose for writing this article?
2. Do you agree with his argument? Why or why not?
If you were absent:

While you read you will use the "Say Something" strategy.
Stop after each paragraph (or two) and discuss what you read with your partner. Take turns going first in the conversation.
If you can't talk about what you just read...READ it again.
As a reminder, you can find the article in your "Shared with me" or your "Incoming" folder.
Also: If you would like to ask for a regrade of your NaNoWriMo Summary Document, you must email me by Friday, January 16. Check out the tab at the top of the page that says "NaNoWriMo Scoring" for essential information about this process.

Welcome Back!
Welcome back!
Happy New Year!
We're going to read for the first ten minutes.
In your English Journal:
Reflect and respond to the following prompt:
- What influence does hip hop have in our society or in our world?
- What is its message?
- Is it just music or something more?
Respond to these questions with examples from your own experience and observations.
If you would like to watch a short 10 minute video on the history of hip hop culture so you better understand what we will be looking at this week, you can find it here. (We're not watching it in class.)
