  • Read these directions carefully. 
  • You will set up your account with your personal email because you don't have email with your district account.

  • Pick a password you will remember. (I suggest Robertsisawesome, best password ever.)
  • Go to FanSchool and set up your account. 
  • You will need a "token" (code) to join our league. I will give you that in class.

Get out your list of countries you've been keeping from watching and reading the news. 
Find out where they are. Try a MAP
Get ready to come up and pick your country when it is your turn. 
Continue to do research via news and maps as countries are picked. 
All the countries you think you want may be taken before it is your turn.

  • On Friday 12/16 we will be having a Socratic Seminar discussion in class.

Goal: Learn how to create a rhetorical precis.

1. A little practice with Ethos, Logos, and Pathos: 
Open Undercover Parent.
Re-read looking for examples of ethos, logos and pathos. Highlight the examples you find, but color code them: green for ETHOSblue for LOGOS, andlavender/purple for PATHOS.
Compare what you find with your partner. 

2. Rhetorical Precis:
"A Rhetorical Précis, pronounced (pray-see), is a summary or abstract of a work. The Rhetorical Précis has a rigidly specific format.... It is important that you follow the format carefully. This is not an easy task. But it is a crucial step towards building critical reading ability...." (Oregonstate.edu)

Unscrambling a Precis: 
  1. Use THIS LINK to get a copy of a doc with a rhetorical precis. (Do not share it.)
  2. The sentences on this doc are out of order. 
  3. Rearrange them until you have a correct precis.

Persuasive appeals: Ethos, Logos, and Pathos

Goal: Begin to understand ethos, logos, and pathos, while looking for examples in our reading.

Quick Write: Describe a time when someone wanted you to do something. How did they talk you into it? What did they say or do to convince you? 

Let's watch a video. Take notes in your English Journal as you watch. (I'll add the video link here later in case you need to see it again.)

Look for more examples:

2. Charting the Text: 
Charting a text helps us understand the text better and shows us the structure of the argument.
Well educated readers can separate what the author is saying from what the author is doing.
This will not be easy at first. The struggle is worth it.
  1. Open your copy of Undercover Parent in Google Drive. 
  2. I'll give your group your charting organizers. 
  3. Work together on each section. You need to talk it out. 
  4. For each section determine what the author is saying first then what he is doing. (Do not move on to the next chunk until you have finished saying and doing for the one before it.)
  5. Since you are new at this I filled in some of the boxes for you to help you figure it out. Read them. 
  6. We are doing this one on paper, so if you are absent you will need to see Mrs. R for instructions and materials.

You should return your group novel to the library. 
Be sure your book review is finished and your English Journal is complete.

  • Be sure to CHECK OUT every book you take home. Yes, you can borrow more than one at a time. 
  • Return books to the white crate at the front of the room. Add a small sticky note with your name when you return it to be sure I know who brought it back. (We have multiple copies of lots of books.)

During our Reading the Novel unit we covered a lot of concepts. Today we will review those concepts and tomorrow you will show that you can apply them.

The test tomorrow will ask you to read a short story and then answer questions about:

  • Setting
  • Imagery
  • Sensory Details 
  • Diction (word choice)
  • Connotation and Denotation
  • Plot
  • Theme
  • You will also need to be answer a few short answer questions about your group novel. You should bring the book to refer to.

Writing About Theme with Support

Goal: Explain how evidence supports the theme.

Agenda:

Explain how your evidence supports the theme

Explain your Evidence: 
  1. Open your English Journal, add today's date at the top. 
  2. Open the Theme Organizer document your team was working with on Thursday and Friday. 
  3. Copy and paste in ONE theme and one set of quotes from your book. 
  4. Write a paragraph in which you explain/defend how this theme is relevant to your book. Use the evidence/quotes you found on Friday to support your points. Explain how that evidence supports the theme. 
Theme Paragraph Frame: (You can change this to fit what you are trying to say.)
An important theme in ...(book title)... is that (....................theme..............) The events of the novel support this theme because............ For example on page ..... it says that ".......(quote from the book)......" This shows that....... because....... Another moment from the book that reveals the theme is when....... Lots to do today


Goals: Reading progress, "AOW" and catching up.

Release forms: 
Occasionally people like to visit our classroom to see how we use our computers, collaborate on projects, etc. Sometimes they like to bring cameras. I want to be sure I know parent/guardian preferences about students being in pictures and videos. Today I am sending home a letter and release forms. Please return them asap. Thank you.

Reading Progress Survey:
Please complete the SURVEY to give me a snapshot of where you are as a reader today.

Article of the Week:
Yesterday I showed you what a mail in ballot looks like and answered your questions about the election. it was clear from the brief discussion that many of you want to know more. So your AOW this week is about digging into what you want to know.

  • I'm providing some links below. 
  • Examine one or more of them closely. 
  • Write two paragraphs in your English Journal. The first should be about what looked at and what you found. The second should be what you think about what you found.

Catch Up: We started several things this week with your groups that you didn't quite finish. Your character conflicts silhouette and the theme organizer you started yesterday still need some work. talk to your group about how you will get those finished and ready for next week.

Character goals lead to theme conclusions

Goal: Apply what you learned in your last lesson on theme to the book you are reading as a group.

Agenda:

Theme work with your group:
  • Have ONE person in your group get a copy of your theme organizer
  • That person needs to rename it correctly, share it with everyone in the group, and share it with Mrs. R. 
  • Work as a group to complete the organizer. Divide the work evenly. 
  • Remember you need evidence to go with your themes. 
  • I will look at the revision history to see who completed what. 

Character Drawing:
  • Some teams still need to finish your character drawing from yesterday. 
  • Do you have both internal and external conflicts?
  • Are they in the right places?
  • Does it look good? (Never underestimate the power of good looking work. 
  • You can get creative with colors, fonts, and props for your character. 
Homework: 
Keep reading. 
Keep an eye on those conflicts your character is facing and how he or she deals with them. Flag them when you see them in your book. 
Be on the lookout for new conflicts that suddenly arise in the middle of the book. 


Keep adding predictions to your predictions chart. 
Keep thinking about how all of this supports the theme(s) you worked on today.

 Goal: Developing a deeper understanding of characters and the conflicts they face.

  • Prompt: 
    • Consider a character from your group novel. 
    • What problems does that character have? 
    • Write about those problems. 
    • Try to come up with at least three things your character is worried about or dealing with.

  • Share it with the people in your group and Mrs. R.

Happy Halloween: We've got work to do

Goals: Assessing our assessments and looking at credibility.

Reading:

  • We always read. 
  • By the end of this week you should be 3/4 done with your group novel. 
  • I know many of you are already finished or nearly finished, be sure you have your second book ready to read. 


Assessment Review: 

  • You get to take a look at how people did on that quiz you made. 
  • You will report the results to me, but I will combine your results with others before I assign any grades. 
  • Go to Google Classroom and look for a new assignment there to begin the process. 
Assessing Credibility: (If we have time.)
  • We hear, read, and see a lot of information these days, but how do you know you can trust the information you are getting? 
  • A lot rides on the credibility of the person sharing the information. 
  • Lets watch part of a video and look at the credibility of the people presenting the information. 

Reminders:
  • Stay safe. Lots of people make some really bad decisions on Halloween. Don't be one of them. 
  • Check your English Journal for work you need to finish or make up. 
  • Revise your memoir or the visual memoir slides if you would like to improve them.

Novel Prediction Charts:
  1. Open your English Journal. (Check to see if you might be missing anything and make a plan to catch up on that later.)
  2. At the top add today's date. 
  3. Insert a table. It should be two columns wide and six rows down. 
  4. Add two predictions about your book, now that you are halfway through it. 
  5. Add evidence (sentence or two) from the book that lead you to that prediction. 
  6. Continue to add predictions and evidence to your chart as you read the rest of the novel.
