Final Socratic Seminar

Goal: A discussion that explores our opinions and understanding about privacy in a digital age.

Redistribution of papers (those flat white things) accompanied by last minute checking of PowerSchool, and final attempts to eek out a few more points.

Expectations:
Your participation in our final Socratic seminar will be monitored via my teacher notes and also a peer observation form. Students with high scores are typically active participants in the conversation, include relevant evidence in their reasoning, and support the involvement of other students.

Last day of classes...

Wow, it is our last day of regular classes.

Agenda:
Read and return books
Finish preparing for Socratic seminar
Be sure your book reviews are turned in. (Use the independent reading tab above to submit links to your reviews.)
Be sure you have made up, called in, or revised any work by the end of the day today. You have until 9:00 PM. (Tip: If you are revising, making up, calling in, or requesting a regrade it is also a good idea to send a polite email to let me know, so that I don't miss your work.)

Your Final:
During our two hour final block we will be having a last Socratic seminar discussion. Please be sure you are prepared for that discussion. See the blog post from Monday this week for more information.

Classroom Books:
Please return all classroom books that you have borrowed. Failure to return classroom books may affect your citizenship grade, so bring them back please. Donations are also welcome.

Socratic Seminar Preparation

Final Preparation:
During the longer period we have for our final we will be having a more extended Socratic seminar. You must be prepared. Today I will give you some questions which you must prepare with evidence, your position, and an evaluation of several other sources.

I am giving you a hard copy of this paperwork in class. You will turn it in at your final.
If you lose it you can find it here to reprint.

For each question you need to look at four sources and determine what that author would say about that question. Below is a list of suggested sources. You are also welcome to find others, but you must share them with Mrs. R via email before the final.

Textbook Return: At the end of the period TODAY we will be going to the library to return all textbooks. Keep only the books you need to study for finals. Those books are due on the day of that final. Locker clean out is Wednesday. You may not use a locker after Wednesday.

Article of the Week: Surveillance powers lapse as Congress debates renewal
Read the article and write a brief summary in your English Journal. In a second paragraph discuss your position on the issue and any connections you see between this article and other recent readings from our class. (You may also want to search for updates on this story as things have been changing fast.)

Call in your Extreme Sports Essay?
Make up essay test from yesterday (2 people in 4th and 5 people in 6th.)

Charting the text

Charting the Text: 
As we have done with many previous articles, today you will be charting what the author is saying and doing in Big Brother Meets Big Mother. We are doing this on paper, so if you are absent you will need to see Mrs. R. for a make up.

Absent Monday or Tuesday?
To make up the assessments from Monday and Tuesday you must see Mrs. R. You can not take them from home. Come at lunch or after school.

Rhetorical Assessment

Goal: Rhetorical assessment with the same article you read yesterday.

Use the article I gave you yesterday if it helps you.
Take the rhetorical assessment (It's only five questions.)

Self Grade your English Journal
Look at the English Journal Scoring Guide
Open your English Journal and paste this sentence at the top. Then complete the sentence.
I believe I have earned a _(number from the scoring guide)_ on my English Journal because ...(reasons you believe you earned that grade based on what you saw in the rubric.)
Have time for something fun? 
Write a letter to yourself in September. Use Futureme.org to send an email to your future self. Include things you think you might forget, (not passwords), or advice you want to use to help you do well in 10th grade. Set your future letter to arrive on September 8, 2015. Be sure to check your email TODAY to verify your address for futureme.org to work for the fall.

Write another futureme.org letter to yourself dated June 1, 2018.  You should be just about to graduate when you get it. (Note: My first class of Freshmen did this four years ago. They are getting their letters next week!)

SOAPSTone Assessment

Goal: End of the year assessments. Read and complete a SOAPSTone activity independently.

Agenda:
Read (your book)
Turn in books you have borrowed
Read an article I will give you in class
Complete the SOAPStone form about the article you just read.

Reading and SOAPSTone:
I will be giving you a hard copy of an article.
Please put your name on it.
You can write on it.
I will be collecting it at the end of the period.
Read the article carefully, more than once is recommended.
Complete the SOAPSTone form on your own.
If you finish early please read and remain quiet while others are working.
