  1. You will complete your work today with your partner.
  2. Together you will find evidence (quotes) in "Cask of Amontillado" that show irony, mood and theme.

  • Complete the READING PROGRESS FORM about your current book, which should be #7 or #8. Update the list in your planner too. 
2. Review of Book #7:  I told you for your review of #7 you would be talking about your book. 
  • Tell us about the book you read for #7. Including the title. 
  • Be sure to say what the book was about, how it challenged you, and who you think would like it. 
  • Avoid major spoilers, but include your thoughts about the message the author was sending.  
  • It's great to include your opinion, but save that for the end.
  • You may want to write down some notes before you start. 
  • You have 90 seconds. (You don't need to say your name.)

We will finish those notes today.

Storyboard: 
Before making a film directors do something called storyboarding.
This means they plan out what will be in each shot of their film.
You are going to make a partial storyboard for "Cask of Amontillado."
I have paper copies if you prefer. OR you can get the digital version HERE.
Finish your storyboard by Thursday.

Note: I can't teach "normal" curriculum today and pretend that 17 students just like you were not murdered yesterday in a school just like ours. We need to know more. We need to do more.

The 2nd Amendment to to Constitution of the United States says that:
"A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed."

  • These materials are provided via a district resource of pro/con issues.
  • Read more HERE.  (Note, you may have trouble accessing these resources from off campus because they are provided through a district resource. I'll share the password you need in a Google Classroom announcement.) 
  • Read something from "viewpoint 1" and something from "viewpoint 2"
  • The goal is to make yourself more informed about these issues.

Respond:
In your English Journal write about what you just read. Include the title of the articles you read and include your thoughts about the viewpoints you read.

"Cask of Amontillado" First Reading

Goal: First reading of "Cask of Amontillado" with predictions.

Agenda:

First read of "Cask of Amontillado"

Reading "Cask of Amontillado" with a partner while predicting. 
  1. Open your Google Drive and find the new document shared with you called "Predictions Chart Poe"
  2. Open the document and use the link at the top to get the text of the story. (You will make your own copy of the story.)
  3. Follow the directions in the predictions document to read and predict as you go. 
  4. Support your predictions with evidence from the text. (Quote the text. Do not paraphrase.)
Homework: Finish reading and predicting on Cask of Amontillado. 
Read your independent book for at least 20 minutes. You should be about 1/2 done with it by now.
Next week you pick your classes for next year. Start thinking about what courses you need to take.

Goal: A second probable passage activity to get us ready for our next reading. It will help you get to know some of the words from the story and get you thinking about what might happen.

  5. Write your gist statement on the post-it I will give you. 
  6. Also copy your gist statement in to your English Journal. 
Art: 
Our next reading takes place in a foreign land long ago. I'll show you some art to help you get acquainted with the time and place.

  • Read your independent book for at least 20 minutes. You should be almost 1/2 done with it by now.
  • Absent yesterday? Be sure you check the blog. You have a paragraph to write in your EJ. 
  • Mrs. R will be out on Wednesday, but Ms. Painter will be her sub. 
  • You will have a new story to start reading and a new reading organizer to complete.

  2. Use the prompt below to write a response about "Possibility of Evil" 
  3. Use evidence from the text in your writing. (Note: Open your reading organizer from last week. It will have the link to the text. Also, be sure you completed it.)
  4. If you need help writing about irony look at THESE SLIDES
  5. You can find some examples of irony from the story HERE. (Note, all these examples were suggested by 9th graders. Some of them may not be great examples. Choose wisely.)
Prompt: 
Shirley Jackson uses irony frequently in “The Possibility of Evil.” Give at least two examples of irony from the story and explain why each is ironic.  What do these examples tell us about the character and what Jackson thinks about human nature?
