Socratic Seminar Preparation

Final Preparation:
During the longer period we have for our final we will be having a more extended Socratic seminar. You must be prepared. Today I will give you some questions which you must prepare with evidence, your position, and an evaluation of several other sources.

I am giving you a hard copy of this paperwork in class. You will turn it in at your final.
If you lose it you can find it here to reprint.

For each question you need to look at four sources and determine what that author would say about that question. Below is a list of suggested sources. You are also welcome to find others, but you must share them with Mrs. R via email before the final.

Possible Sources:
SOURCE A: IS IT EVER OK FOR PARENTS TO CYBER-SPY ON THEIR KIDS?

SOURCE B: 6 WAYS SOCIAL MEDIA CAN RUIN YOUR LIFE

SOURCE C: BIG MOTHER IS WATCHING YOU

SOURCE D: A PARENT'S GUIDE TO INTERNET SAFETY

SOURCE E: SEXTING TEENS CAN FACE LIFELONG CONSEQUENCES

SOURCE F: INFOGRAPHIC

SOURCE G: GENERATION LIKE (PBS VIDEO)

SOURCE H: EYE ON THE CITY: DO CAMERAS REDUCE CRIME?

SOURCE I: WHEN IS IT LEGAL TO FILM PEOPLE WITHOUT THEIR PERMISSION?

SOURCE J: SWEEPING AWAY A SEARCH HISTORY

SOURCE K: I'M BEING FOLLOWED: HOW GOOGLE-AND 104 OTHER COMPANIES-ARE TRACKING ME ON THE WEB

SOURCE L: IS YOUR SMARTPHONE TRACKING WHERE YOU GO?

SOURCE M: AMERICANS SHARPLY SPLIT ON PRIVACY ISSUES

Textbook Return: At the end of the period TODAY we will be going to the library to return all textbooks. Keep only the books you need to study for finals. Those books are due on the day of that final. Locker clean out is Wednesday. You may not use a locker after Wednesday.

BOOK REVIEWS: Your last two book reviews must be complete, in Goodreads, and links posted to the submission form by Wednesday June 10th.

Your "To Do" list

Mrs. Roberts and Mrs. Morrow are both out for a meeting today. Remember to represent PLHS well.

Article of the Week: Surveillance powers lapse as Congress debates renewal
Read the article and write a brief summary in your English Journal. In a second paragraph discuss your position on the issue and any connections you see between this article and other recent readings from our class. (You may also want to search for updates on this story as things have been changing fast.)

Your To Do List: (Be sure you are all caught up on these things.)
Call in your Extreme Sports Essay?
Make up essay test from yesterday (2 people in 4th and 5 people in 6th.)
Self grade your English Journal? (See post from Tuesday for directions.)
Write your book reviews
Turn in your book reviews
Write to your September self. (Again see post from Tuesday)
Done with all of that? Read your book.

TEXTBOOK RETURN: Monday June 8 bring ALL of your textbooks to English. We will be going to the library to return them near the end of the period. Keep any books you need to study for a final, but take them home. You will not have the use of a locker after June 10.

Your To Do List

Please begin today by completing the END OF COURSE SURVEY.

Charting the Text:
As we have done with many previous articles, today you will be charting what the author is saying and doing in Big Brother Meets Big Mother. We are doing this on paper, so if you are absent you will need to see Mrs. R. for a make up.

Absent Monday or Tuesday?
To make up the assessments from Monday and Tuesday you must see Mrs. R. You can not take them from home. Come at lunch or after school.

Your To Do List (Are you done with all of these things?)
Self grade of your English Journal? (See blog post from yesterday.)
Book reviews? Use the independent reading tab above to turn them in.
Did you write to your future self? (See blog post from yesterday.)

Rhetorical Assessment

Goal: Rhetorical assessment with the same article you read yesterday.

Agenda
Read (While Mrs. R does attendance and talks to the people who were absent yesterday.)
Rhetorical Assessment
Self-grade your English Journal
Something fun (maybe)

Rhetorical Assessment:
Our series of smaller assessments continues.
Use the article I gave you yesterday if it helps you.
Take the rhetorical assessment (It's only five questions.)

Self Grade your English Journal
Look at the English Journal Scoring Guide
Open your English Journal and paste this sentence at the top. Then complete the sentence.
I believe I have earned a _(number from the scoring guide)_ on my English Journal because ...(reasons you believe you earned that grade based on what you saw in the rubric.)
Have time for something fun?
Write a letter to yourself in September. Use Futureme.org to send an email to your future self. Include things you think you might forget, (not passwords), or advice you want to use to help you do well in 10th grade. Set your future letter to arrive on September 8, 2015. Be sure to check your email TODAY to verify your address for futureme.org to work for the fall.

Write another futureme.org letter to yourself dated June 1, 2018.  You should be just about to graduate when you get it. (Note: My first class of Freshmen did this four years ago. They are getting their letters next week!)

TEXTBOOK RETURN: Monday June 8 bring ALL of your textbooks to English. We will be going to the library to return them near the end of the period. Keep any books you need to study for a final, but take them home. You will not have the use of a locker after June 10.
