Book Recommendation Slide:

  • What's your favorite book that you read this year
  • You are going to make a recommendation page for that book.

Block Day: Lots to do

Goals: Write a book review that includes some complex sentence structures, review our survey data further, and preview our final project.

Note: Block schedule Monday-Thursday this week. This post applies to Monday and Tuesday.

Agenda:
Read
Grammar lesson
Review of Book #11
Review of our data
Preview of our next project

Grammar lesson / Review of Book #11:

  • One of the things that makes plagiarism so easy to spot, is that adult writers use more complex sentence structure than 9th grade students do.
  • Today you'll use some mentor sentences to make your review of book #11 sound older and more mature.

1. Include a compound sentence with a "who" phrase. Separate your "who" phrase with commas.
Example: Harry Potter, who was a wizard, attended Hogwarts, and later worked for The Ministry of Magic.
2. Include a "though" statement.
Frame: Though this book was ____________, I still enjoyed it because_____________.
Write your review of Book #11 in your Book Review doc. Use the normal, four paragraph, book review structure.

Looking at our data:

  • Last week we looked at the slides that held the data from our academic honesty survey.
  • Open those slides. Look through that data again. "Read" those graphs.
  • Which slides have the most important data?
  • Use the slide sorter to move those slides to the top. (I'll show you.)
  • Use the slide notes section to write about what you think that graph is showing.
  • When you are ready complete THIS FORM

Preview of Academic Honesty Project:

  • We will conclude our unit on academic honesty with a project.
  • You can view the project outline HERE
  • Today we are just talking about it.
  • All you have to do is start thinking about ideas and decide who you might partner with.
  • We will work on this more on Wednesday and Thursday.

Reminders:  Add these things to your calendar
5/25 Initial ideas due for your Academic Honesty Project. (You fill out a form in class.)
5/31 (or 6/1 for period 2) Project Proposal Due.
6/5?? Textbook return. (Still checking on the exact date for this.)
6/6 Academic Honesty Project due. Be prepared to tell the class about your project.
6/7 Book #12 due.
6/8 Last day for regrade requests.

Evidence and Opposition

Why would anyone jump out of a
 perfectly good airplane?
Goal: Work on adding evidence to your essay. Focus on correctly quoting, paraphrasing and summarizing the words of others with citations.

Agenda
Read
Using the words of others
Objections and Counter-Arguments
Writing time

Using the words of others:
  • Direct quotation: In “Extreme Sports Not About Risk-taking: Study,” Dr. Brymer found that people who participate in extreme sports have an image of “risk takers and adrenaline junkies”. He found this really isn’t true (3).
  • Paraphrase: In “Extreme Sports Not About Risk-taking: Study,” Dr. Brymer notes that people who participate in extreme sports try to be prepared so they can decrease their risk of injury (8).
  • Summary: In “Extreme Sports Not About Risk-taking: Study,” Dr. Brymer cites his study to show that many people who participate in extreme sports do so for reasons other than an adrenaline rush. He points out that they don’t like to be out of control and that by preparing for their sport, they feel they are really in control (11).
Objections and Counter-Arguments: One of the paragraphs in your essay should start like this:
     Introducing objections: Opposing viewpoints:
  • Some people may say that _______________.
  • Critics might argue that __________________.
  • I know some people will think _________________.
  • There are people who would disagree because _______________.
  • Those who have never tried ____________ might (think/say/argue) that ________________.
Addressing opposing viewpoints with counter arguments:
  • These critics haven't considered ______________________.
  • When you know more about ________________...
  • Doubters should see how____________________...
  • To say that _____________ is an exaggeration of_________________.
  • While it is true that ___________________, it does not necessarily mean that________________.
(Some of these suggested frames come from They Say I Say, by Graff and Birkenstein, 2014)

Reminders:
  • Finish your draft of your Extreme Sports Essay by tomorrow for writing groups. Draft grade.
  • SOCRATIC MAKE-UP is this Thursday after school at 2:30.
  • Finish reading book #10. Next week I'll give your more info about "review #10" which will be a bit different from our usual review.
  • Be sure you have a link to a non-fiction article in your EJ to go with book 10.

Tuesday, May 1, 2018

Making progress on that draft

Goal: make progress understanding what you are writing about. Make progress actually writing.

Agenda:
Read
Discuss the quote you are writing about with your group.
Work on adding to your draft. Your complete draft is due before school on Thursday 5/3 for a progress grade.

I suggest you discuss these things with your group:
  1. The meaning of the quote.
  2. The extent to which you agree or disagree with what the quote says.
  3. Possible opposing viewpoints to your positions. (What would someone who disagrees with you say?)
  4. Possible counter arguments to those opposing viewpoints.
  5. Help each other with possible evidence to support your position.
Self-regulate and decide for yourselves when you need to move from discussion to drafting time.

Reminders:
  • Finish reading book #10.
  • Friday 5/4 is the end of the grading period. Check your English Journal. Are you missing anything? Could any of your work be better? A little effort now can really help you later.
